TheANNUAL STEPHEN MONACO CHARITY GOLF EVENTto benefit CHILDREN’S NATIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM was created by Tom and Jana Monaco in 2015 to celebrate the birthday of a special boy whose life touches many. Due to a late diagnosis of a rare metabolic disorder, isovaleric acidemia, their son Stephen suffered a severe brain injury at age 3 ½ resulting in significant disabilities and medical issues... preventable had he benefited from comprehensive newborn screening at birth. All babies now benefit thanks to changes in NBS laws nationwide impacted by Stephen's life.

THE STEPHEN MONACO NUTRITION AND GENETICS FUND” of the Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the Rare Disease Institute at Children’s National developed to improve life for others living with similar rare metabolic disorders. Rare disorders like Stephen's and his sister Caroline affect approximately 1 in 100,000 births and require the highly specialized expertise of the specialists and their team in genetics for their care. To date, we have raised over $160,000 for this amazing group of specialists thanks to the many kind hearts and generous donations over the past four years.
